A new norm · Everyday life.

Still a kid.

Being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 11 made Luke grow up pretty quickly in some ways. He has to constantly pay attention to how he’s feeling to detect highs and lows. He has to keep track of all of his devices- his phone, his Dex receiver, his bag of supplies. (This has been the trickiest part for him!) He’s missed a lot of class time for appointments, so he has to make sure he’s getting work made up & knows what’s going on in class. Some nights are full of interrupted sleep because of low blood sugar, so he goes to school with a not-so-great night of sleep & still has to deal with everything else. That is a lot for an 11 year old! Sometimes I forget he’s still a kid.

Until things like this happen…

We were getting his supply bag ready to go for the next day. I told him to put some alcohol pads into his bag because his supply was getting low in his bag. Like always, he drops what he’s doing and does what is asked of him. A few minutes later, I walk by and see this. I laughed so hard. He takes things very literally.

It still makes me smile. I love this little reminder that my kid is still a kid, no matter what life has thrown his way.

  1. Very good reminder, Kristin, and well said. I sense your “sweet” spirit as you share your take on life with a T1D KID. 🙂 It’s a pleasure to read each post (I find myself looking forward to them because they are comforting to me). Thank you for sharing what God lays on your heart.
