We have officially kicked off One Walk season! Two weeks ago we attended the Progress to Type None One Walk Kickoff at the Kroc Center in South Bend. It was a ton of fun with rock climbing, swimming, playing in the gym, and most of all- meeting other Type 1 families. I finally got to meet one family that I’ve been Facebook messaging since they got their diagnosis. They sat at our table and it was like we’d known each other forever… and Luke finally got to meet a boy with T1 who is about his age!
We also got to learn a little more about the JDRF organization, the One Walk, and what the money we fundraise for goes towards. Here are a few of my takeaways…
*Eighty cents out of every dollar raised goes towards research initiatives including artificial pancreas, encapsulation, smart insulin, and beta cell restoration.
*If one of the research initiatives isn’t providing any results, JDRF will remove its funding and put it towards a different initiative.
*There are more than 200 JDRF One Walks held across the United States each year.
*More than 900,000 people walk each year to cure Type 1.
*Since the walk started in 1992, over $1 billion has been raised for T1D research.
Last year, Luke’s Lifesavers raised $1345 towards T1D research for the One Walk and we had 31 teammates.
This year our goal is to raise $2500 and have 40 teammates.
How can you help?
1. Some of you have already helped us reach our goal by purchasing a MudLOVE bracelet. Our first fundraiser was a huge success. You all helped us raise around $750! (We still have a handful of MudLOVEs left, if you missed out!)
2. Others of you came and bought cookies and lemonade from Luke at our garage sale. Luke was able to raise almost $30!
3. We will soon be starting our 2016 Luke’s Lifesavers T-Shirt fundraiser. Stay tuned!
4. You can join Luke’s Lifesavers! By joining our team, you can either donate towards T1D research, raise money through your friends & family, walk with us on September 25, 2016 in Mishawaka, or ALL three! The walk is a lot of fun with a DJ, face painting, games, and more all before the walk. Then, we walk together as a team! It’s pretty impressive seeing all of the teams walking together. All for one cause. To find a cure for Type 1.
If you want to join us in any way- donating, fundraising, or walking- please use the link below to sign up! We would absolutely LOVE to have you walk with us… and walking with us will cost you nothing!
